Satoshi Nakamoto

The pseudonymous author of the Bitcoin whitepaper and the original Bitcoin software.

Satoshi Nakamoto is the name used by Bitcoin’s creator or creators. Satoshi published the whitepaper in 2008, launched the network in January 2009 and collaborated publicly on the software before withdrawing in 2010–2011.

Satoshi communicated through email, forums and source-code repositories. The record documents design decisions and software work, but does not establish a verified civil identity, nationality or gender.

Satoshi’s withdrawal removed an obvious leader who could speak for the protocol. Bitcoin continued through open-source maintenance and voluntary adoption, strengthening the distinction between an inventor and a system no inventor controls.
