Bitcoin Magazine Books released Aaron van Wirdum’s The Genesis Book on 3 January 2024. The book follows the people and projects that preceded Bitcoin, connecting economic motivations with the development of computers and cryptography. It is neither the biography of a single inventor nor a current user manual. [1] [2]
The public manuscript opens with Douglas Jackson and e-gold. Digital balances represented claims on gold, but the operating company recorded transfers. Through the service’s fate, the author illustrates digital money’s dependence on an institution; backing by metal alone did not remove that dependence. [2]
The introduction divides the narrative into foundations, Cypherpunks and Bitcoin. The first part connects monetary thought, cryptography and hacker culture; the second follows privacy tools and attempts at digital cash. The third turns to Nakamoto’s design. This structure explains connections, but does not by itself prove the direct influence of every predecessor. [2]
The Hashcash chapter follows Adam Back and anonymous email remailing. Operators of these services needed to limit mass abuse without requiring users to identify themselves. Computational postage was intended to make sending large volumes of messages costly, while remaining cheap to verify. [3]
The author distinguishes Hashcash from a complete form of money. Computation was a cost to the sender, not a reward for the recipient, and the postage could not be spent onward like ordinary currency. The chapter thus shows why Proof of Work was an important building block, but did not alone create an entire monetary system. [3]
The chapter also describes an adoption obstacle: a recipient could not easily require Hashcash if senders did not use it, while senders had little incentive to add it without recipients demanding it. This history therefore includes coordination of use, not just the invention of an algorithm. It is not a straightforward story of inevitable success. [3]
In CheckSig’s written interview notes, van Wirdum explains that his work led him to study Hayek and private money more deeply. He describes Bitcoin’s emergence as combining useful parts of earlier attempts. This is the author’s explanation of his research aims, not proof that Nakamoto personally read every economic text mentioned. [5]

01Is Hashcash the same as Bitcoin in the book?+
No. The chapter we read presents Hashcash as computational postage and explains its limitations. It is part of the prehistory, not an identical monetary system.
02Is the public manuscript a verified copy of the printed edition?+
We did not verify such equivalence. We read the entire public introduction and the Hashcash chapter; when describing specific scenes, we therefore explicitly refer to the manuscript and do not claim knowledge of the entire published book.
