Prague Bitcoin ecosystem

Companies, open-source projects, community venues and conferences connected with Prague

The Prague Bitcoin ecosystem is a historically formed network of people, companies, open-source projects, venues and events, not one organisation or an official membership list.

Prague connected early mining infrastructure, hardware self-custody development, cryptocurrency ATMs, a hackerspace, the public experiment Paralelní Polis and later BTC Prague. These projects have different owners, legal entities, aims and lifespans; a Prague origin is not a certificate of security, quality or present activity in the city.

Prague Bitcoin ecosystem is an editorial label for links among projects founded, based or convened in Prague. It has no shared membership, management or ideology, so every historical and current connection needs its own evidence. Marek ‘Slush’ Palatinus launched Bitcoin.cz Mining Pool in Prague in December 2010, later known as Slush Pool and Braiins Pool. It was the first publicly available Bitcoin mining pool; its history also includes the 2012 Linode breach and a loss of 3,000 BTC. [Braiins — The full story of Braiins Pool, Braiins and Slush]

SatoshiLabs says Marek Palatinus and Pavol Rusnák met at the Prague hackerspace brmlab in 2011. With Alena Vránová they laid the foundations of SatoshiLabs and prototyped a device that isolated private keys from an ordinary computer. [SatoshiLabs — Our story]

SatoshiLabs then introduced Trezor One, an early influential hardware wallet for self-custody. A Prague origin and open development do not alone prove flawlessness, an independent audit of every version, the manufacturing location of every component or the safety of a user's procedure. Braiins took over pool operations and expanded the mining stack with firmware and protocols. The Prague roots are documented, but the current website names Braiins Mining Ltd. as operator; that alone does not establish present Czech incorporation, ownership or employee locations. GENERAL BYTES dates its founding in Prague to 2013 and its first public Bitcoin ATM to 2014. Its current machines support multiple cryptocurrencies, making this a Prague-rooted ATM infrastructure story rather than proof of Bitcoin-only focus or adoption across Prague. Paralelní Polis opened in Holešovice in 2014 as a space for cryptoanarchy, privacy, art and self-organised institutions. Bitcoin Coffee made practical bitcoin payments visible, but one café cannot serve as a citywide statistic of sustained merchant adoption. [Cooperative City — Paralelní Polis] [The Guardian — Bitcoin Coffee in Prague]

The original Paralelní Polis project ended regular activity after ten years in 2024. Its successor cowork Second Culture closed in March 2026 and Dělnická 43 changed use, so older accounts must not describe the venue as a Bitcoin institution operating today. [WIRED Czech — Paralelní Polis ends after ten years] [E15 — Dělnická 43 after Paralelní Polis]

BTC Prague began as a conference project in 2022 and stages international Bitcoin editions with English and Czech programming. ‘Europe's biggest Bitcoin event’ is the organiser's own description; programme, speakers, venue and scale must be tied to a dated edition. [BTC Prague — official site]

The record shows an unusual Prague concentration in mining, self-custody, ATMs, community and events. It does not prove city endorsement, a unified legal or ideological entity, permanent local manufacturing, security certification or broad Bitcoin adoption among residents and merchants.
