Alex Gladstein

Human-rights strategist and author who links Bitcoin to censorship-resistant payments, savings under weak currencies, and civil-society financing under authoritarian rule.

Alex Gladstein is Chief Strategy Officer at the Human Rights Foundation (HRF) and has served as Vice President of Strategy for the Oslo Freedom Forum since its launch in 2009. His Bitcoin work is advocacy and field reporting: it documents activists and households using an open monetary network when bank accounts are frozen, cross-border payments are blocked, currencies lose purchasing power, or financial activity is surveilled. It does not make him a Bitcoin developer, protocol authority, neutral adoption researcher, or guarantor of the reported outcomes.

HRF identifies Gladstein as its Chief Strategy Officer and as the Oslo Freedom Forum’s Vice President of Strategy since the forum began in 2009. His documented role is to connect dissidents and civil-society groups with technologists, journalists, funders and policymakers. In the Bitcoin field he is primarily an organizer, grant advocate, interviewer and writer, not a maintainer of Bitcoin Core or a representative of network consensus.

His core thesis separates Bitcoin from speculative crypto tokens and presents two functions: a censorship-resistant payment rail for donations and payroll, and a bearer savings asset outside a weakening local currency. He cites cases involving Nigerian protest fundraising, Cuban savers, activists in Nicaragua, Russia, Hong Kong and elsewhere. These are named case studies, not proof that Bitcoin is the best tool for every country, activist or household.

HRF launched its Bitcoin Development Fund in 2020 to support open-source work on privacy, self-custody, censorship resistance, education and infrastructure. HRF’s five-year report said that by June 2025 the fund had awarded more than $8.5 million in bitcoin to nearly 300 projects in 62 countries; later rounds continued in 2025 and 2026. Gladstein helps frame and publicize this program, but grant decisions are institutional and a grant does not confer protocol authority or certify a project as safe.

Gladstein co-authored The Little Bitcoin Book in 2019, published Check Your Financial Privilege in 2022 and Hidden Repression in 2023, and in 2025 argued in the Journal of Democracy that Bitcoin can help activists operate when conventional finance is weaponized. His writing also addresses IMF and World Bank policy, sanctions, CBDCs, monetary colonialism and, more recently, AI tools for human-rights defenders. These works combine reporting, interpretation and advocacy and should be read as argued positions.

Bitcoin can bypass one intermediary but does not remove volatility, internet and electricity dependence, device compromise, fees, liquidity constraints, exchange KYC, legal exposure, coercion or blockchain surveillance. Self-custody introduces key-loss and operational risk; stablecoins or cash may sometimes be more practical but add issuer and censorship risk. Gladstein’s cases require independent corroboration, current local law and later outcomes; neither HRF affiliation nor publication proves causality, representativeness or future adoption.

Alex Gladstein is Human Rights Foundation’s chief strategy officer. His Bitcoin work centers on how open monetary networks are used under authoritarian rule, capital controls and currency breakdown, and on directing grants to open-source privacy and resilience projects.

Primary records expose these checkable anchors: Human Rights Foundation · Chief Strategy Officer · Bitcoin Development Fund launched 2020 · grants for privacy, decentralization and resilience. Dates, roles, formulas and institutional actions should be verified there before interpretation.

The safe boundary is: HRF advocacy ≠ Bitcoin consensus; a BDF grant ≠ protocol authority. The coordinate records evidence and mechanism; it does not turn advocacy, correlation or a model output into a Bitcoin consensus fact.
