Underclocking operates ASICs at a lower frequency relative to stock or another explicitly identified profile. It may be manual or automatic; undervolting is a separate change that firmware may combine with lower clocks.
Braiins distinguishes clock and voltage reductions. Lower frequency may permit stable operation at lower voltage, but changing MHz alone does not guarantee a voltage change. Braiins uses W = a × F × V² to explain frequency F and voltage V. This simplifies the computational component’s relationship; it is not an exact whole-system power formula including PSU and fans. LuxOS frequencyset returns immediately while frequency changes gradually. Check completion with frequencyget or IsRamping. S9 supports only certain frequency points, so returned Frequency may be the nearest allowed value rather than the exact request. Verify actual state, not merely acknowledgment. [LuxOS — frequencyset]
LuxOS ATM reduces performance when hot and can raise it again when cooler within configured bounds. Every available temperature input must permit an increase, including chips or water inlet when hardware provides them. One cooler board therefore need not suffice for the whole system to recover. LuxOS Minimum Profile bounds how far ATM may reduce performance; with supported power targeting it corresponds to power_min. If that floor prevents enough reduction and temperatures keep rising, firmware may shut the machine down. Underclocking does not guarantee continued mining under arbitrary cooling conditions. Braiins DPS changes targets according to temperature and configured steps; recovery depends on version, mode, timing conditions and DPS Memory. Lower performance despite a higher configured profile is therefore not automatically an ASIC fault. Check the active target and reason for limiting instead of disabling protection. Underclocking can leave mining active; complete suspension is a different state. Compare the same interval, temperature, accepted work, errors and whole-device wall power. A lower firmware reading alone proves neither actual savings nor zero draw, and gives no certain prediction of future lifespan.
